The Trent and Mersey Canal was opened in 1777 and is one of the oldest canals in Britain. One of the most remarkable features of the canal is the Anderton Boat Lift - built in 1875 it was the worlds first boat lift. It has recently been restored and is now in back in use. The canal is 93 miles in length and links the River Trent (via Preston Brook) and the River Mersey, it has 70+ locks.
