Ashby Canal

The Ashby Canal is 22 miles long. It travels through the town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, which has to be worthwhile just for the name.

Basingstoke Canal

The Basingstoke Canal connects Odiham to the River Wey just beyond Woking. The canal has a large number of wooded areas and this has proved to be an issue in high winds - e.g. the winds of January 2007 where no less than 47 trees fell and blocked progress along the canal!

The Birmingham Canal Navigations are an sprawling network of many canals within the Birmingham area - over 180 miles of canals and 200 locks - leading Birmingham to compete with Venice on the number of canals. The canal system connects to the Grand Union Canal, the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, and the Staffordshire and Worcester Canal. There are many individual interconnected canals that make up the navigations including The Dudley No 1 and 2 Canal, Tame Valley Canal, New Main Line, Old Main Line, Walsall Canal, Wyrley and Essington Canal, Rushall Canal and Daw End Canal.

The Brecon and Abergavenny Canal is a short narrow canal starting from Newport and going up to Brecon. It is a very picturesque canal with not quite as many locks as you would imagine. See more at the MBACT web site

Caldon Canal

The Caldon Canal branches off the Trent and Mersey Canal for about 17 miles and has two short branches - one to Leek and the other as far as Froghall.

Grand Union Canal

The Grand Union Canal runs from Brentford to Birmingham. It has many branches caused by its history of amalgamations of many other canals, including the Regents Canal, Hertford Union Canal, Warwick and Napton Canal,Warwick and Birmingham Canal, Birmingham and Warwick Junction Canal, Grand Junction and Old Grand Union Canal, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire Union Canal, Leicester Navigation, Loughborough Navigation and Erewash Canal.

Lancaster Canal

The Lancaster Canal has one of the longest stretches of lock free canal - at 42 miles. The canal travels from Preston to Tewitfield with a branch out to Glasson by the sea. At Tewitfield, the canal comes to an end as the Northern reaches up to Kendal in the Lake District are currently derelict.

Leicester Canal

The Leicester Canal or the Grand Union Canal Leicester Line - remarkable for the Foxton flight - the largest flight of Staircase Locks in the UK. The line travels 66 miles from Norton Junction on the Grand Union Main Line to connect to the River Trent. There are branches to Market Harborough and Welford.

The Llangollen Canal is famous for the great Pontcysyllte aqueduct. It is rightly named as one the most beautiful waterways in the world. But it is a victim of its own success. In summer there are queues of boats waiting to get across this aqueduct and it can become quite a bottleneck.

Oxford Canal

The Oxford Canal starts in Oxford (where it joins the Thames), and continues up to Hawkesbury Junction where it meets with the Coventry Canal. On its way it connects with the Grand Union Canal at Napton and Braunston.

Rochdale Canal

A quite stunning canal for scenery, the Shropshire Union Canal is 50 miles of good British countryside. At its end it goes to Ellesmere Port Boat museum.

Staffordshire and Worcester Canal

The Staffordshire and Worcester Canal travels from the River Severn at Stourport to the Trent and Mersey canal at Great Haywood. It also links to the Shropshire Union Canal and the Stourbridge Canal. It is 46 miles long with 45 locks.

Stratford Upon Avon Canal

The Stratford Upon Avon Canal connects to the Worcester and Birmingham Canal at Kings Norton Junction and travels South to connect to Lapworth Junction in the middle and finally to Stratford Upon Avon where it meets up with the River Avon.

Trent and Mersey Canal

The Trent and Mersey Canal was opened in 1777 and is one of the oldest canals in Britain. One of the most remarkable features of the canal is the Anderton Boat Lift - built in 1875 it was the worlds first boat lift. It has recently been restored and is now in back in use. The canal is 93 miles in length and links the River Trent (via Preston Brook) and the River Mersey, it has 70+ locks.

Worcester and Birmingham Canal

The Worcester and Birmingham Canal is a really lock heavy canal. It connects to the River Severn at Worcester and travels to Birmingham. It now connects to the Birmingham Canal Navigations, but this has not always been the case.
