UK Car Insurance
Step 1 - Set your Requirements
Setting your requirements before you start can help save time as you go through all the comparisons on the various sites, changing these half way through can cost alot of time. Decide on the type of insurance:
Third Party - the legal minimum
Third Party, Fire and Theft - Adds on payout if car is stolen (and not recovered) or burnt
Comphrehensive (or fully comp) - Adds on additional items such as damage to your own car (accidental damage and vandalism), some insurance for injury and medical (see policy details though)
Consider the extras that you may need:
Legal
Replacement car
Breakdown cover
Consider also your level of voluntary excess:
Excess is the amount you pay towards a claim, before the insurance company pays out. The higher the excess, the lower your premiums (the amount you pay). Younger drivers or those with a poor driving record may be required to pay a compulsory excess.
To help you see the effect of different excess amounts on your premiums, try a comparison site such as Confused.com - they have sliders that can help you set the excess.
Step 2 - Comparison Sites
Comparison sites can allow you to compare a large number of insurance companies very quickly. Here are some of the comparison sites:
